DAMA-Chicago Q4 Chapter Meeting – DAMA DAY

November 19, 2025 @ 9:00 am3:45 pm

We are excited to host an extended DAMA Day for our 4th quarter meeting on November 19th.  This special event will be a full day of presentations and information sharing.  The morning session begins with Frank Cerwin presenting Master Data Orchestration: Transformational Approaches to a Successful MDM Program.  This tutorial is the in-depth Master Data Management presentation that was well-received at the Enterprise Data World (EDW/DGIQ) conference in Anaheim CA and DAMA-Philadelphia’s DAMA Day earlier this year.  Following lunch, Atul Mangla will present Best Practices for Designing and Operationalizing Data Governance.  We finish out the day with an information sharing and networking session where you can get your data management questions and challenges (“opportunities”) answered by your fellow experienced members.

A special thanks to Actian Corporation and Data AG for sponsoring the event and providing breakfast and lunch.  The event will be held at the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts in Schaumburg IL.  The meeting will be live-streamed via Zoom to members who choose to join virtually.  However, we encourage in-person attendance for you to better experience interacting with the speakers and your fellow members.

Master Data Orchestration: Transformational Approaches for a Successful MDM Program

Managing information about customers, employees, suppliers, products, services, and locations across all operational applications, analytical applications, and business partners can be one of the most challenging data management activities of your organization.  Many MDM programs end up too limited in scope or their cost far exceeds their value to the organization.  Some MDM programs are terminated within months of their launch because they were not designed to be sustainable for the long-term.  This tutorial will provide a deep-dive into a proven framework and model for an optimal long-term sustainable MDM program.

The Master Data Orchestration Framework and Data Commerce Model were developed, implemented, and fine-tuned employing several disciplines including modeling, architecture, governance, integration, application development, information security, B2B e-business, and database administration.  MDM Programs designed and launched by the speaker with these transformational approaches have withstood the test of time and will be highlighted in presented case studies.

Covered topics include:

  • Navigating and addressing the unique complexities of Master Data Governance and Data Quality
  • Using the Master Data Orchestration Framework to design and develop your MDM solution to fit your specific requirements
  • Integrating global industry standards with customers and suppliers for seamless business processes
  • Leveraging the Data Commerce Model for long-term MDM program success
  • Transitioning MDM technology architectural styles over the lifetime of an MDM program

This tutorial was a highly rated session at the 2025 Enterprise Data World / Data Governance & Quality Conference.  Its objective is to broaden your mindset and provide a renewed perspective of Master Data and MDM.

Best Practices for Designing and Operationalizing Data Governance

Data, Data, Data Everywhere, but HOW to do data?

In our third quarter chapter meeting, Ken Kring shared the ins and outs of the ubiquitous nature and existence of data, and the business realities that drive day-to-day operations and decisions. But how aligned are desired business outcomes to the CDO/CDAO office, and how do we go from WHAT we need to do with data to “HOW we do data”?

While a well over-played term in the land, I will still use it: Data Governance.

A comprehensive approach to designing and operationalizing data governance involves establishing clear ownership, embedding governance in everyday workflows, and aligning initiatives with organizational objectives to ensure data is accessible, secure, and valuable for decision-making.

This is the way.

Together, we will explore 3 keys to drive user adoption and generate value and consumption across your organization:

  • Core Design Principles, aligned with Business Outcomes/Objectives
  • Operationalizing Best Practices
  • Build a “Data Culture”: Sustaining and Improving Governance

In today’s data-driven world, organizations need advanced capabilities to transform vast amounts of data into actionable insights. Data management comes with operational challenges and requires an effective data strategy. Equip your organization for success in data management, boost efficiency, enhance customer experience, and drive innovation.

Atul Mangla, Vice President of Worldwide Professional Services & Data Solutions at Actian Corporation, is an innovative leader working to drive the success of the customer journey for data solutions (i.e. governance, quality, observability, analytics, master data management, lineage, compliance, privacy, security, integration).

Data has always been at the forefront of his work, be it as a practitioner or adviser or thought leader; regardless of role, he consistently realizes revenue growth, cost reduction, and operational efficiencies, showcasing his commitment to driving success across the business – leveraging data solutions as a strategic pillar.
